All I wanted was someone – a guardian of sorts- to hold this space to cradle my womb as she would like her own to be - to love and trust this power moving in me and the creative force emerging during this time.

A Warm Hello…

My name is Carol Gautschi. I’m a mother of seven blessings, grandmother to six and wife to Paul since 1974. My calling to become a midwife began after I had become a mother of two and had experienced midwifery firsthand.

I was given a contrast by comparison…

The fact is, I was sexually and physically molested separately by two different doctors with my first two births – and also given grossly wrong information that caused breastfeeding delay and hindered bonding. I was plagued by fear, again by misinformation. Didn’t take a rocket scientist to see a profound message in that!

My first two birth experiences strongly planted seeds for the need of global reform and I started the reformation there and then in my own body… I was personally moved by the power of birth and right away sensed the sacredness and vulnerability of the moments during, before and after. Those moments had been stolen from me. With my third born – I was swollen with the need for change as was my belly. This time, fiercely protective of my precious blessing within (I had been privileged to attend two homebirths in 1970 and 1973 and knew intuitively the differences), I was determined to do it differently, to reclaim what had been denied me previously. Frustratingly, the closest help was over 60 miles away. All I wanted was someone – a guardian of sorts- to hold this space to cradle my womb as she would like her own to be – to love and trust this power moving in me and the creative force emerging during this time.

Gentle, calm reassuring Joan stepped into my life through an acquaintance. The time spent with this midwife transformed me, helping me see that labor is wondrously spiritual, powerful, and a profoundly healthy force. I, to this day believe that women are being robbed by a society that does not see to care about the uniqueness of this time, this right of passage, and that not treating it with tender, sensitive respect, we are doing ourselves harm– more harm then we can imagine. From that moment on I believed that birth is the highest place a woman can go in her body on this planet. I knew then that all women deserve the type of loving and compassionate care that women like Joan provided. She was the catalyst for my life’s work of service to women during their pregnancy and birth, a life-changing monument that was driven deep within me at that time. I want to send Joanie a big kiss for all her love and the beginnings I received from her, as well as Doctor Ettinghausen and his helpers during my early years.
A couple of people have referred to me as a Christian mystic midwife. Is that different or what?

For me, becoming a midwife was a metamorphosis, coming largely from practical heart-and-hands experience. I‘ve served families as an empirical midwife and doula or Monitrice since 1978. Midwifery to me wears many hats. I am “with-woman” in many capacities… counselor, confidant, nutritional advisor; breastfeeding consultant; childbirth educator; family health supporter; parenting resource, friend, at times her spiritual advisor and more. I am pleased when women come back to tell me they have been nurtured with a sense of personal strength and self-confidence so that they may experience birth with dignity and empowerment. Giving birth at home with most midwives facilitates a gentle and warm welcome for the baby, instills a sense of respect and control for the parents and strengthens the family. I am tremendously honored and humbled to serve women and their families during one of the most important and sacred events in life.

I caught my first baby by “accident”… (*grin* really – by divine appointment). My best friend’s baby came faster then the scheduled midwife arrived. She looked at me and said “you can do it”. That was in 1981. Thus… began my essential midwifery journey. The first 50 births or more were like midwife training boot camp – If you have the opportunity to sit in on one of my childbirth classes I use many examples of that era to let you vicariously experience the depth of that time and why I am who I am today.

June 2008

Pregnancy, labor and birth are normal, human functions to which the majority of women are extremely well suited. Some medical professionals oppose out of hospital birth because they believe the risks inherent in childbirth warrant specialized equipment and services only available in hospital. There is no scientific evidence that for the majority of healthy women, giving birth in hospital is safer than giving birth outside the hospital, with the assistance of a well-trained, experienced attendant. It is very important that midwife and clients work together and share the responsibility for a safe and enriching childbirth experience. One of the many responsibilities the midwife has is to educate clients so they can make informed choices about their care. Knowing about each other begins such a journey. Thus, I present the following.

I’ve worked as a Traditional, Holistic, apprenticeship trained midwife for 25 years before getting my license in October, 2003. I am a nationally-certified professional midwife (NARM CPM #98050029) and a Washington State licensed midwife (#MW00000280).

Traditional midwifery is different than much of midwifery currently available. Most Traditional Midwives are “community created”. Meaning – folks recognize our giftedness in attending women at birth (during/after apprenticeship/study/hands-on), hence you are asked to participate in their births vs going to school and hanging a shingle. In other words –“Your gift makes way for you.” We do the clinical, medical protocol most are familiar with and develop relationship with our clients that makes for better understanding and trust.

One of the hallmarks regarding traditional midwifery is that women need to take care to educate themselves and be RESPONSIBLE for their health, emotionally and physically. If parents are not willing to do this, I cannot in good conscience help you. With proper guidance and observance to your particular needs, even in difficult circumstances, most families fare better than generally expected.

At this time, I have seven children and nine grandchildren. I have been happily married to Paul since 1974.

As a community created midwife I have provided home-based maternity care since 1978. I have been blessed to be a part of approximately 1,200 births. The first homebirth I attended was in 1970. I have been attending births as a primary midwife since 1981.

Currently, I am in a solo practice (averaging 3-4 births per month). I also provide labor support (Monitrice) for planned hospital births and care for women occasionally, in tandem with a physician. That would mean those who want to labor at home but give birth in hospital.

Although, I believe that every woman has the right to choose where and with whom she has her baby, my practice is limited to low risk pregnancies and births. Should your pregnancy fall out of the low risk category, other arrangements will have to be made for this birth.

Expectant mothers must be healthy, experiencing a normal pregnancy and not planning to receive pain medication during labor or anesthetics during the birth. A fare percentage of my clients use water during their births/delivery. Most express the fact that it is helpful in pain-relief due to the advantages of buoyancy and comfort.

Parents-to-be must agree to medical consultation and/or hospitalization if serious medical complications arise either during the pregnancy, the intrapartum or immediate postpartum/postnatal period.

Clients are seen every Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and on Tuesdays from 9:30 – 4:30. Your appointments will be one to two hours in length and there is no charge for consultation visits. Expectant mothers are seen, on average, every month from 4 – 12 weeks of pregnancy until 28 weeks (8, 12, 16, 20, 24 and 28th wk). Then appointments are scheduled every 2 weeks (30, 32, 34 & 36 wks). Starting at 36 weeks, I see mothers weekly. I expect you to do your best to keep your appointments and be on time. I do a home visit sometime around the 37th week of pregnancy so that I may see where you live in daylight, make sure you have your supplies and if you desire, meet with others who will be present during labor or in conjunction with your birth.

Generally, during your pregnancy, birth and afterwards, there will be one or two assistants/apprentices present. They will, with your permission, feel, measure and check you and perform various other clinical skills as the opportunity may arise. My goal is to duplicate the Traditional Midwifery model so that we will be a lasting profession for families in the future.

If I have an adequate amount of requests, I teach homebirth preparation classes – each series is 6 – 8 weeks long and each class is 2-3 hours. The cost is $150.00 per couple. I usually limit the group to no more than 10 couples. This smaller number of couples allows for a pleasant “group” environment and lots of personal instruction and fun.

Again, clients are expected to holistically (spirit, mind & body) eat healthy, be well informed and to take responsibility for reading and educating themselves. I also have a lending library I make available to you. You are responsible to replace lost or damaged books.

I expect you to consider the gravity of the risk you are taking, and be willing to take full responsibility for the outcome of your birth. I cannot offer you any guarantees other than I will do my best; with the knowledge I have, to provide you with a safe and rewarding birth experience.

During the delivery, the father is encouraged to participate fully in this event, if desired. He usually ‘catches’ his baby as she/he emerges, sometimes with moms loving hands assisting. This is optional and many men appreciate the opportunity. Our roles will be to assist with the delivery of the baby and placenta, to monitor bleeding, to watch over the baby, assessing the Apgar score, doing a general physical, and facilitate bonding and breastfeeding.

Even with low risk births, complications may arise. Usually there is ample time to transport to hospital, but occasionally we deal with the complication at home. Some of the complications I have dealt with are fetal distress, prolonged labor, dehydration, meconium, breech presentation, twins, shoulder dystocea, prolapsed and occult cord, postpartum hemorrhage, uterine inercea, abruption of the placenta, birth defects, and respiratory distress in the baby.

Federal law mandates that hospitals may not refuse emergency care to pregnant women or women in active labor. Our local hospitals use the obstetrical doctor “on call” for homebirth transports. Without private physician backup, you will not know who will handle your birth ahead of time. In the event that you do not care for the physician “on call”, you may ask for another, more suitable to you. This is a patient’s right.

At approximately 32 weeks you will receive a handout with a list of supplies (approx. $53. since 10/07), you are expected to have in your home for the birth. They need to be there by your 36th week. I am not responsible for these supplies, and you must have them by the home visit.
If I am notified when your labor begins and kept in touch with during your labor, it is very rare that I would miss your birth. If I am at another birth, “off-call”, or out of town, I will have a back-up midwife available.

Birth is an amazing time in a woman’s/couples/families life. As a midwife, I clearly recognize this therefore my goal is a safe and rewarding birth for both you and your baby.

If we agree to work together, I look forward to a rich and satisfying experience while sharing this time with you.

It is the responsibility of every parent to see that his or her children get the best possible start – both physically and spiritually. The offspring of future generations depend on us.

We have come to a very serious time on this planet when toxins are rampant. The air, water, food and soil we use are full of chemicals; chemicals that are extremely harmful to us and the life of our unborn. We are dying from auto-immune disease and the like as a result. It is the responsibility of every parent to see that his or her children get the best possible start – both physically and spiritually. The offspring of future generations depend on us.

Foods to Avoid

White sugar and white sugar products, including corn syrup and fructose. Fructose may remove copper from the bones.

Bleached white flour, and white flour products

“Wheat” flour: this is usually a mixture of mostly bleached white flour with a small amount of wheat. The label should read whole wheat flour, or stone ground whole wheat. Whole is the key word.

All soft drinks. Even the carbonation of these soft drinks leaches out calcium, not to mention the artificial or refined sugars, chemicals and caffeine. NEVER use “diet” sodas (or foods). Aspartame (Nutrasweet) is a neuro(brain)-toxin.

Refined cereals. ex. chemicals used to package, & preserve … refining, sugars …

Highly salted foods, chips, pickles processed meats, olives etc.

White rice, with the exception of Basmati / Texmati rice

Hydrogenated oils and saturated fats (most margarines). For butter why not make “Better Butter”? In a food processor mix 1 lb. of butter to 1 cup each of olive oil, and coconut oil. Blend til smooth. I also add 1 teas. or so liquid lecithin. This tastes very good and gives you daily EFA’s. Be sure and keep it refrigerated, because it melts faster than butter.

Peanut butter that is highly processed. Peanuts are grown with cotton and therefore are sprayed with both pesticides. They both, cotton & peanuts receive over twenty different sprays. Organic is best if you eat peanuts at all. Peanuts are very hard on your pancreas.

Heavily processed meats: bologna, hot dogs, salami, bacon, corned beef etc. Anything with sodium nitrate, nitrite, or MSG. “Excitotoxins” (neurotoxic = brain toxin – much evidence that they are responsible for many auto-immune disorders. )

CHECK YOUR LABELS! The following ALWAYS contain excitotoxins: glutamate (usually monosodium glutamate, MSG), aspartame, autolyzed yeast, or yeast extract, caseinate ingredient names containing “hydrolyzed” L-cysteine. The following FREQUENTLY indicate the presence of excitotoxins: broth, flavors, flavoring, protein, seasoning, spices, natural flavors. Eat primitive!

Canned goods that contain any of the “no nos” on this list. With canned vegetables you might as well drink the fluid in the can and throw away the other ingredients to get any real food value out of it.

Chocolate, all candy, ice cream made with chemicals (commercial “old fashioned” usually is the least adulterated)

Canned goods are generally not good but if you use them use those that are devoid of chemicals or sugars READ LABELS!!

Do NOT use Safeway milk products!! Correction: Safeway finally listened to our complaints and removed the bovine hormone from their milk cows. Safeway milk is now safe to drink. Click here to read more.

Coffee, tea, alcohol

Raw meat, or fish (i.e. sushi)

Fried foods

“Instant” foods

Foods to Include

In place of sugar – Maple syrup, honey, unrefined sugar used sparingly, blackstrap molasses, fruit syrup, juice, & dates as sweeteners.

Whole Grains, flours and products (Fresh ground is Best) If weight is a concern modify grain use. Spelt is a good substitute for wheat sensitivity.

Natural fruit juice, in moderation, (can really put on the weight) and vegetable juice (Fresh made with a juicer and drank immediately is Best)

Natural vegetable seasonings, sea salt, kelp (high mineral content); Salt (celtic or Real Salt®) to taste, not excessively.

Brown and wild rice, Basmati white rice is fine also.

Oils, cold pressed, unrefined. Olive, & sesame are always cold pressed. Palm, & coconut oil. Many people are finding good butter supplements through good oils esp. olive oil. Butter is better for you than margarine. Avoid Canola oil.

Clean meats (not pumped full of antibiotics/hormones.), if you can grow them … or buy from those who do.

Carob sweetened with fruit juice or dates

IF you have eaten ALL your protein and greens – Ice cream … natural variety “Breyers” or “old fashioned” , although with sugar is somewhat better.

Some herb teas … Ask me if you’re not sure of toxic herb content. READ LABELS! Even chamomile and peppermint can be toxic in pregnancy.

Natural, unprocessed products. Ann example would be if buying instant potatoes. Instead, buy fresh and bake them. Baking retains many of the minerals, eat the skins for potassium if organic. Sweet potatoes are much better for you due to glycemic content.

Baked, poached, steamed or stewed foods. Veggie steamers are a good investment!

Use stainless steel or glass cookware. Aluminum causes disease, and Alzheimer’s may be one of those diseases. Aluminum is Toxic. Silverstone or Teflon comes off into your food.

Nutrition Tips:

Fresh is best – the more processed the food the less nutritional value.

Reads labels and become familiar with non-foods and toxic chemicals. Then avoid them. Protect your family!

Organic is more nutritional than non-organic.

Eat for health and performance (energy, not esthetics.)

Learn the language of your body’s nutritional needs.

On times that you ignore suggestions 1-4, for goodness sakes, enjoy it!

Always drink at least 2 quarts of water per day!!! (Preferably, drink half your body weight of water in ounces)

You may not feel it now – but you will feel the results of your good or bad eating habits later. And remember to always thank God for, and ask Him to bless your food.

2 Corinthians 9:6, Galatians 6: 7-8

Good nutrition is of vital importance throughout the prenatal period and during breastfeeding. Ideally, eating well before conception is best, but if this hasn't occurred yet...now is the time!

Good nutrition is of vital importance throughout the prenatal period and during breastfeeding. Ideally, eating well before conception is best, but if this hasn’t occurred yet … now is the time!

Always emphasize whole natural foods. Unprocessed (NO ham, hotdogs or lunch meats), fresh meats or other protein sources, lots of vegetables (especially raw and greens), unprocessed cheeses, and whole grain breads. Please read labels, and learn what you are feeding your baby! Eliminate all pop, coffee, black teas, and so-called “juice” drinks. Raw & or fresh is best, frozen is okay, but canned is useless regarding fruits and vegetables.

Salt should not be restricted. Salt to taste. Too little, or too much, salt can cause elevated blood pressure and edema. Moderation is the key. The best salts to use are “Real Salt” or Celtic Sea Salt. Use of foods that are cured with salt are best left alone. In other words …Avoid salted chips, pickles, olives, nuts, processed or lunch meats etc.

Pregnancy is not the time to diet. Weight gained with quality food in pregnancy is desirable, and different, than weight gained on junk food. No pattern or amount of weight gain is “normal”. Eat QUALITY food, and you will gain what you and your baby need. Do not overeat. If you now have a weight problem, we can talk about it at your next visit. Be sure to remind me of this if it is of great concern to you.

Pregnant mothers need to drink a lot of fluids. The Red Raspberry, Alfalfa, Nettle Leaf, and Oat straw infusion is mandatory if you have a birth with me; there’s another blog post under “New Clients” that explains why. Freshly made juice, and at least 2 quarts of water per day (with a half of lemon squeezed into each quart, if desired), will help to expand the blood volume. This is very important during pregnancy.

You should eat slowly, chew well, and eat until you’re full. If you are not very hungry or nauseous, this could be because of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia). Small, frequent snacks of high quality food, usually a carbohydrate, can help alleviate this problem. Keeping something digesting in your stomach at all times has proven to combat most nausea. A good resource for slow digestion is complex carbohydrates. Try and pick healthy options like baked yams or sweet potatoes, or AkMak crackers. Nausea is uncomfortable, but excessive vomiting is the greatest concern with regards to the overall health of the baby. You need quality food (especially protein) and fluids to grow a healthy baby, so keeping it down is important. Try eating something when you get up at night to go to the bathroom; preferably a complex carbohydrate or milk. This happens frequently in the first trimester, because the appetite has not yet caught up with the increased demand for nutrients.

Approximately 2,400 – 2,600 calories and 70 – 90 grams of protein (more with twins) is generally enough daily intake for these nutrients. Fresh organic vegetables, especially the dark green leafy variety, and organic fresh fruits (not to excess: 1-2 pieces/day) are essential.

Eat a wide variety of foods. Changing your diet too quickly is not good. Try and incorporate better eating habits slowly; but do change if needed. For info on your personal “metabolic type” and how best to eat for YOU, ask me for the “Metabolic Profile Test”. I will be happy to answer any questions regarding this.

Be careful adding foods to your diet, which have been restricted for some time. If necessary, slowly integrate to avoid reaction. They tend to cause an excessive amount of mucous, which taxes your system and may create disease.

Now I want you to keep a three – five day diet history. Write down for me everything you eat & drink including water for three – five full days. Include amounts … i.e. 8 oz. water, approx. 3oz. of ling cod, a lrg. drk. green leafy salad etc. Bring it to your prenatal visit so that we can go over it together. This should portray an average 3 days eating intake. Do not pick a time where you’ll be eating better or worse than usual.

Each woman and pregnancy are unique and each will find for herself the optimal diet if her general dietary habits are steered in the right direction.

If you have any questions regarding any specific detail in this guide, please do not hesitate to ask! Nothing is too simple or elemental to me when it comes to nutrition. I have been busily at this subject before I was out of high school (1970). I understand this may be new to some of you and I am more than willing to explain anything.

We will continually be looking at your diet physically, mentally and spiritually throughout your pregnancy. You are eating in more than one way!

To your care!

“Health is not a medical artifact. Economics, politics, the social system in which we live, conditions in the work-place, poisons in the environment, and personal relationships are all elements in causing health and disease. Doctors treat illness; they do not make us healthy. For the vast majority of women physical health and a sense of well-being during pregnancy is nothing to do with how often they visit the doctor, but with the social conditions in which they live.” –from Sheila’s Kitzinger’s book – Birth over 35, Sheldon Press

Foods to Avoid

White sugar and white sugar products, including corn syrup and fructose. Fructose may remove copper from the bones.

Bleached white flour, and white flour products, soy, corn http://www.soyinfo.com/haz/gehaz.shtml – fermented organic soy is okay, occasionally.

It is designed like MSG to make you addicted to the food substance that it is in.

Non medicinal-Chocolate, (usually American unless organic) all candy, ice cream made with chemicals (commercial “old fashioned” usually is the least adulterated)

Coffee, tea, alcohol

Raw meat, or fish (i.e. sushi)

Fried foods

“Instant” foods

Soft cheeses

Shell fish

Papaya

Foods To Include

In place of sugar – (Organics) Agave, Maple syrup, local honey, unrefined sugar used sparingly, blackstrap molasses, fruit syrup, juice, & dates as sweeteners.

Sprouted whole grains, flours and products (Fresh ground is Best) If weight is a concern significantly modify grain use. Spelt is a good substitute for wheat sensitivity.

Homemade juice, in moderation, (can really put on the weight) and vegetable juice (Fresh made with a juicer and drank (chewed) immediately is best)

Natural vegetable seasonings, sea salt, kelp (high mineral content); Salt (celtic or Real Salt®) to taste, not excessively.

Organic Brown and wild rice, Basmati white rice is fine also.

Oils, cold pressed, unrefined. Olive, & sesame are always cold pressed. Palm, & coconut oil. Many people are finding good butter supplements through good oils esp. olive oil. Butter is better for you than margarine. Avoid Canola oil = GMO

Clean meats (not pumped full of antibiotics/hormones.), if you can grow them … or buy from those who do.

Canned goods are generally not good but if you use them use those that are devoid of chemicals or sugars READ LABELS!!!

Carob sweetened with fruit juice or dates or organic dark chocolate (occasionally)

IF you have eaten ALL your protein and greens – Ice cream … natural variety “Breyers” or “old fashioned” , although with sugar is somewhat better.

When possible grow your own vegis/fruit or buy organic local from Saturday Markets IF you know where and how foods are grown.

Natural , unprocessed products: an example would be if buying instant potatoes; buy fresh and bake them. *Baking retains many of the minerals, eat the skins for potassium if organic. Sweet potatoes are much better for you due to glycemic content.

Baked, poached, steamed or stewed foods. Vegi steamers are a good investment!

Use stainless steel or glass cookware. Aluminum causes disease, and Alzheimer’s may be one of those diseases. Aluminum is Toxic. Silverstone or Teflon comes off into your food. Always thank God for, and ask Him to bless your food.

Fresh and raw food is best – The more processed the less nutritional value.

Read labels and become familiar with non-foods and toxic chemicals, so you avoid them. NO GMO’s!!! http://www.safe-food.org/

Protect your family!

True organic is nutritional, non-organic usually minimally nourishing and chemical laden.

Eat for health and performance (energy, not esthetics.) EAT RAW FOOD SNACKS and capitalize on SUPERFOODS.

Learn the language of your body’snutritional needs. Listen to your “motherwit” if you are healthy. Dis ease is produced by unhealthy indulgences. Stay alkaline!

When you occasionally indulge in decadent healthy treats, enjoy it!

Always drink at least 2 quarts of water per day!!! (Ultimately, drink half your body weightof water in ounces)

You may not feel it now – but you will feel the results of your good or bad eating habits later.

Eating per my recommendations and using the Herbal Infusion has improved the well-being and health of my clients and their babies for over twenty five years.

A Warm Hello,

Eating per my recommendations and using the Herbal Infusion has improved the well-being and health of my clients and their babies for over twenty five years. This standard of healthy care is both preventative and proactive – Your baby and your body will thank you!

When you choose a prenatal vitamin please choose a “food form” brand as opposed to those often made with a coal-tar base. Here are some final recommendations, unless you have other specific needs inherent to this pregnancy.

Vitamin C

At least 300-500mg daily

lowers risk of PROM (premature rupture of membranes):

lowers incidence of PIH (pregnancy induced hypertension)

lowers incidence of UTI’s (urinary tract infections)

Citrus Bioflavanoids

Between 1,200 – 3,000 mg daily

Arterial, venal integrity

Integrity of amniotic sac

Immune system health

Probiotic

Diet is not enough. Multiple forces disturb our normal bacteria flora ie. chlorinated water, antibiotics in foods, anti-inflammatory, fast foods, travel, exposure to new infective organisms.

70% of your immune system is in your gut

Promotes digestion

Helps to best digest dairy

Helps make enzymes and digest nutrients

Creates some immunization against harmful bacteria

Vitamin D3

2,000 – 2,500 iu (and sunshine).

If you are pregnant during the time of year that you won’t be getting sunshine, you should be taking 1,000 mg daily.

Omega Three Fish Oil (Carlson’s)

Brain nerve health

Eye vision health

Immune system health

Radiant healthy Skin

Joint health

ATTENTION: Stop taking omega three’s when you’re 36 WEEKS pregnant OR YOU MAY GO OVERDUE!

Fresh air with deep breathing

The way you feel, in every way, at the beginning of your pregnancy is usually much different than the way you will feel at the end of your pregnancy. Choose your habits well and you will not regret the consequences of those choices.

…and don’t forget to COMMUNICATE WITH your BABY!!! This is part of your baby’s emotional food! Say “I’m sorry” when you are and give her/him much love and blessings. Her personality is being formed.

Many blessings and have a wonderful discovery of yourselves and this new little life within!

I chose Carol for my midwife at the birth of my 1st child last year. We interviewed several experienced midwives and even worked wth a nurse midwife but as soon as we met carol we were so pleased and lucky to have her services. Finally a healthcare provider who trusted me to take my health and birth experience into my own hands and make it the best I could with her unwavering support. Carol is not a nurse. She is better than a nurse. She is an absolute expert in midwifery. If you want a homebirth experience that is safe and reflects your individual preferences with a caregiver that is knowledgeable, honest and dedicated then you want Carol as your midwife.

There is no midwife in our area like Carol. I used her services for prenatal care and home delivery for my last two children and only wish I would have known about her and home birthing for the first 3. Carol is knowsledgeable about medical procedures as well as using natural and herbal treatments, patient, caring, encouraging of nutritional needs, and totally passionate about life from the womb, breastfeeding, and mothering issues. I highly recommend her!

Awesome Midwife

Her focus is on helping me be a super healthy mama so I have have a super healthy baby and have the best chance at having an “easy” and peaceful home birth. Her methods were gentle and I appreciated her attitude that it was I that was doing the delivery, she was just there to gently guide me as I desired and needed it.

Worth the Drive!

Carol Gautischi has overseen the pregnancy and births of both of my children and is now currently overseeing our third. Even though we live in Bremerton, we continue to return to Carol as our Midwife. Her prenatal and postnatal care, knowledge and skills is beyond the average care you may receive in other medical areas. She is very personal with her clients, deeply caring about you as a whole person. She also teaches a pregnancy and birth class that I felt was vital in preparing for birth and labor. I know that by seeing Carol both me and my baby are assured the healthiest pregnancy possible.

Midwifery: The Way It Should Be!
Gwuinifer C. in Forks, WA

Carol helped me through my 2nd pregnancy with compassion, honesty, and a sweetness of spirit I thought nonexistant in today’s overcrowded health care systems, where patients are little more than a number. Her approach was personal, holistic; she nurtured me, and helped my husband and I learn to nurture the life growing in me physiologically, spiritually, and emotionally. She is extremely knowledgeable, has decades of hands-on experiences, and yet somehow made us feel like the birth we created together was unique, and the most magical experience that all involved would ever take part in. She was a huge support to me during pregnancy.

The birth was intimate, beautiful. She was there for me also during my son’s early struggles, offering advice and comfort, helping my husband understand how best to help. I can’t sum it up. She’s a wonderful woman. I recommend her highly to any thoughtful, spiritually-attuned woman looking for an experienced partner on the journey to motherhood.

Carol has high standards for her clients, especially with regard to nutrition, and she is a phenomenal birth attendant. We have been richly blessed by Carol’s expertise and loving kindness.

Carol was my midwife of choice for my last baby, I had never met her but I knew she had helped guide the love of my life into the world. My birth experience did not go as I had planned but was a miracle nonetheless and Carols kind heart and guidance was so needed, I needed her to help me to decide that its ok to change your mind and do what needs to be done. I love here, she is more than a midwife…I was blessed with her presence and thus must gush about its glory.

She attended with grace and fortitude to their subsequent home births. Our experience was not without trials to which she gave fantastic support. We are forever in her debt.

A Wonderful Caregiver
Anonymous

Carol Gautschi, CPM, Sequim, Washington. A midwife who has become a dear friend, Carol has attended my past three pregnancies and births. She drove me to Seattle when I was in pre-term labor with Loren; she held my hand during the exams and tests, she cried with me when the ultrasound showed anencephaly. She read the Prayers of the Faithful at Loren’s funeral liturgy and allowed me MANY visits with my subsequent pregnancy to ease my fears. She prayed with me when doubts threatened, she supported my decisions fully. A wonderful caregiver and dear, dear friend.

The following are instructions on preparation and the intended value of these herbs during your childbearing year. You will be drinking a combination of the following herbs...

As we have discussed during our consultation, you will be drinking a blend of herbs as a nourishing and toning support during your pregnancy and post-partum. Options for purchasing these herbs are on the end of this post.

The following are instructions on preparation and the intended value of these herbs during your childbearing year. You will be drinking a combination of the following herbs:

1 part Nettle leaf cut

1/2 part Alfalfa leaf cut

1 part Red Raspberry leaf cut

1/2 part Oatstraw cut

To prepare infusion:

Warm a quart glass jar under hot tap water.

Put one large handful of herbal mixture in empty, warm jar.

Pour boiling water into jar, making sure to stir down herbs.

Cover jar and leave overnight to extract nutrients.

In the morning, pour contents through a fine mess strainer (the metal screened type with a handle works best.) Rinse jar out and pour your infusion back into the jar. Discard or compost herbal material.

Drink entire quart over the day. You may dilute the infusion with water or herbal tea if you wish, be sure to work at drinking the entire quart.

If you have never been a tea or coffee drinker, this infusion may seem strange to your taste buds. The flavor can be improved upon by adding one or two herbal tea bags. Flavors from Celestial Seasoning such as “Magic Mint”, “Grandma’s Tummy Mint”, “Mandarin Orange” or “Lemon Zinger” as favorites for some women. Diluting the liquid with more water or natural unsweetened fruit juice is an option that some women prefer.

(Remember to refrigerate herbal infusions after straining. Herbal infusions are food, and will begin to ferment after several hours in summer heat.)

Herbs have been used throughout history as beverage, food and medicine. The herbs which have been chosen for this blend are considered toning/nourishing. This classification is the same given foods which you would eat on a daily basis. Each of these herbs can be, and often are, eaten as foods in this and other cultures, and can thus be seen as relatively harmless and “good for you”. As with any food, however, there does exist a possibility of sensitivity. Should you be concerned about this issue, or should you have known grass, grain or food sensitivities, you can test each herb individually before purchasing the blend.

Most health food stores do have these particular herbs in 4 ounce boxes. Needless to say this would not be cost effective. You can prepare quart jars of each herb, one herb per week, drinking two glasses per herb per week, to check for allergic reactions. If you should notice one causes any unusual reactions, you can still purchase the others and blend them together on your own. Experience has not revealed any problems with Nettle. Occasionally, people who are allergic to gluten are allergic to Oatstraw. People with extreme grass allergies sometimes exhibit some sensitivity to Alfalfa. Red Raspberry, drunk in large quantities, on it’s own, can cause some constipation. In general, this blend has been drunk by virtually every client I have served with nothing but outstanding results and is an enjoyed immensely by most of the women (partners and children often as well) in my practice.

Alfalfa (Medicago Sativa)

One of the richest mineral foods in the world, alfalfa’s roots grow as deep as 130 ft. into the ground, allowing it to reach minerals not available at higher levels. The name “alfalfa” is Arabic and means “Father of All Foods” (Al-Fal-Fa)

Contains: Calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, chlorophyll, biotin, choline, inositol, iron, PABA, sodium, sulfur, tryptophan, Vitamins A, B complex, C, E, G, K, P and U.

Alfalfa is a restorative tonic, which promotes pituitary gland function. It contains eight enzymes known to promote a chemical reaction that enables food to be assimilated properly, helping to normalize weight, reduce incidence of ulcers, diabetes and other digestive orders. It alkalinizes the body, reducing arthritis symptoms, neutralizing uric acid, improving kidney function and reducing edema. A toning agent to the intestines, it improves peristaltic action of the bowels, improving colon disorders and normalizing bowel movements. It contains anti-fungal properties. Alfalfa’s tryptophan levels help improve sleep patterns. In tablet form, alfalfa has been used successfully to reduce heart disease, and improve arrhythmias. Alfalfa has been shown, in laboratory trials, to reduce cholesterol levels by reducing plaque.

Nettle (Urtica Dioica)

For those of you who have wandered into woodlands near water, stinging nettle will be a familiar memory. Nettle is a popular table green still today, eaten much the same way as cooked kale or spinach. Rich in chlorophyll, nettle is a world favorite for all urinary tract problems.

Contains: Chlorine, chlorophyll, formic acid, iodine, magnesium, potassium, silicon, sodium, sulfur, tannin, Vitamins A and C, facilitates absorption of Vitamin D form the sun, proteins, iron, copper, histamine, glucoquinine.

Nettle is a gentle yet powerful tonic to the adrenals, and is know to rebuild the adrenal cortex, thus improving energy levels. It has been used with great success in the treatment of adrenal exhaustion, one of the primary underlying causes of Chronic Fatigue and a host of other autoimmune disorders. As the adrenals are the fundamental glands of the immune health, Nettle is used to improve general immune function, thus increasing resistance to illnesses caused by viruses or bacteria’s. With its strong affinity to the adrenals, Nettle is used extensively to eliminate allergy and hay fever symptoms.

It has been used throughout time to restore kidney function, eliminating edema, cystitis, incontinence and urinary tract infections. Improving liver function, nettle reduces jaundice. The high vitamin C levels in Nettle ensure that dietary iron is absorbed properly, thus reducing anemia. Its unique blend of nutrients stabilizes blood sugar, strengthening the nervous system and reducing headaches. By improving nerve signal to the muscle, Nettle helps increase muscle response time, thus reducing incidences of post-partum hemorrhage. By improving elasticity of the skin, Nettle helps prevent tearing of vaginal tissue. Combined with Burdock Root, Nettle is extremely helpful in the treatment of eczema. Nettle is an excellent promoter of abundant breast milk.

Oatstraw (Avena Sativa)

Oatstraw, as any livestock breeder will confirm, builds the strongest possible body, with the greatest resiliency. Used extensively in European cultures throughout time for health and beauty, our country has let this valuable herb slide into disuse.

Contains: Starch, silicic acid, calcium, high in Vitamins A, C, B complex, LE, G, phosphorus, potassium, mucin, and proteins.

Oatstraw contains Avenin, an amorphous alkaloid which is highly nutritive to cells, improving normal cellular reproduction. Its calcium form is so easily absorbed that Oatstraw is considered the premier herb/food for the nervous system. Working directly on the brain and endocrine system, Oatstraw reduces nervous disability, anxiety and epilepsy. Due to its ease of absorption, Oatstraw has been used with great success in addiction recovery. As calcium is responsible for the enzymatic process by which nutrients are laid down in the muscle, Oatstraw improves muscle tone throughout the body, reducing leg cramps and heart palpitations, improving digestion and elimination. Improving muscle tone allows the cardiovascular system to function more vigorously, thus improving circulation to the uterus and placenta, and therefore, to the preborn infant. Its high levels of minerals make Oatstraw invaluable in building excellent bone density and enamel on teeth. Oatmeal’s high levels of silicic acid are responsible for its international fame, in skin disorders such as acne and relief from topical inflammations such as chicken pox and poison ivy. Oatstraw, in cases of allergic reactions, seems not to affect the individual to the same degree as the oat grain itself and is often used, without aggravation by those who cannot eat oats.

Cleavers (cut and sifted) is an excellent substitute in this formula if you are allergic to oats.

Red Raspberry (Rubus strigosus or idaeus)

Likely the most well-known pregnancy herb, red raspberry has been used throughout Europe and the Americas for centuries as the premier childbearing years herb. Growing easily in almost every environmental condition, even the youngest country child can identify the wild, briary canes as they overtake everything in their path.

Contains: Fruit sugar, pectin, citric acid, malic acid, silicon, Vitamins C, B2, niacin, carotene, magnesium, manganese, molybdenum, selenium, improves Vitamin D absorption.

Red Raspberry is a specific muscle toner, working on the smooth muscles of the body, including the uterus. As it soothes spastic muscle behavior, it improves contractibility of the uterus during labor. The particular properties of the herb tone and nourish the ovaries, and by relationship to the pituitary, reduces nausea, morning sickness and intestinal spasm caused by excessive progesterone. This same relationship has made Red Raspberry a popular herb for menstrual cramps and hot flashes. Due to its astringent qualities, it is used for mouth ulcers, bleeding gums, hemorrhage, hemorrhoids and cold sores. The unique mineral blend in Red Raspberry promotes healthy nails, bones, teeth and skin.

Finding Herbs:

If you have never tried herbs as food and medicine, this is the ideal time to learn the wonderful benefit they can be for you. Beginning with the highest quality product is important, for you will receive little benefit from stale, old materials. If you have tried herbs before, and your only exposure has been those little boxes on health food store shelves, you have never really tried medicinal level herbs. If you are experienced with herbs, the following list may give you options you never had for price and quality.

Bulk Herbs

If you are ready to adventure into purchasing herbs at pound level and want the industry standard of excellence for harvesting, drying and shelf life, AmeriHerb is for you. This company guarantees the freshest herbs on the market and can be counted on to deliver on its promise. They carry hundreds of herbs. All herbs must be ordered in one-pound minimums. Since the formula calls for 1 pound additions of alfalfa and oatstraw, you will need to order 2 pounds each of nettle and red raspberry; not a problem as most women will go through at least 4-5 pounds total of the blend during the pregnancy. A minimum order of:

2 pounds Nettle leaf cut

1 pound Alfalfa leaf cut

2 pounds Red Raspberry

1 pound Oatstraw cut

This will produce 6 pounds, leaving you with plenty of herbs for your breastfeeding year.

The following is the very best price I have found, but you have to order under my customer # and have it drop-shipped to you. Attached is the order form to use. Call in your order with a credit card. They do not take American Express. It would cost over $100.00 to order locally in the health food stores – so enjoy your discount!

Herbal Products

There are hundreds of companies selling dried and tinctured herbs, herbal oils and salves; it can be difficult to know where to begin. Blessed Herbs is an excellent first exposure. Family owned and operated, Blessed is open to the public, prides itself in quality and reliability and has a moderately wide choice of products. They have been blending the one pound Herbal Pregnancy Blend for years. Should you wish to order the ready-made blend from a company that can provide additional items in the same order, you may wish to contact them for a catalog. Blessed is notorious for delays and has not sent me a catalog for some time, so I cannot tell you the current price. In ’95 it was $16. Per pound blended, plus shipping.
