The Heart Behind Classical Midwifery

by Carol Gautschi

I want to speak to the women who are frustrated with the way in which Midwifery is heading. If this does not resonate with you, please disregard it.

Almost everywhere I go some feel like they have to become a nurse to be able to do this work. Whether subliminally being persuaded by the clothes in which we wear, the things we feel obligated to do, or the way in which we think. Or overtly by medical mandates or regional regulations and laws, as I realize being a nurse is a prerequisite in some countries or states.  Much has to do with our foundations, as in whomever trained us or who or what most influenced us. If you’re content with this, this too is acceptable as we can use a gentler form of care in every model of Birth, however you may not resonate as you read further.

However, I’m speaking to those who are not good with it. Because I believe there was once a model of Midwifery that was the original model that was sacred and genuine, focused on tender time-spent care of mamababy, and family. I believe deeply there was. And I want to awaken those that want to remember and engage our roots and creatively restore a beautiful Midwifery that once was. I call it "Classical Midwifery". Classical Midwives practice “health”-care, which is preventative and watchful, rather than “medical”-care, which is often causative and interventive.

All we need to do is read even one memoir from the past. Or look at the art, sculptures, carvings, and paintings from every culture and age depicting midwives doing their work. You can almost feel the tenderness in the moment within each image.

I don’t want to offend anyone, or appear to be divisive, so please stop reading now if this is already triggering you. You’re not whom I’m speaking to.

Again, I just want to present my sentiments to those who want to be set apart and pursue the ancient spiritual calling of Midwifery and how it once was. I’m not saying we eliminate anything that is of value from our modern day. Rather I want to express that there is a Classical way of Midwifery that is being diminished which we can remember and intentionally preserve in our present day practices. Classical Midwifery is Holistic and Spiritual, with rich traditions that have been held dearly. It is an art and passion to wholly serve Mamababy.

For the sake of preserving and promoting Classical Midwifery practices, I am organizing a conference in Greece in the fall of 2025. There, we can see and learn some of the ancient ways of Midwifery in a country that has been established for 5,000 years!

Midwifery is autonomous in Greece. We might witness holism and spirituality among local midwives, with their aversion to extreme medicalization of childbirth, with drugs and over emphasis on professionalism. The western medical agenda has caused Classical Midwifery traditions passed down for centuries to be co-opted into a system that is creating poor outcomes physically, emotionally and spiritually.

If this resonates with you, please join my contact list, because I would like to invite you to my Classical Midwifery Conference in Greece 2025. I want to nurture a true but Ancient Midwifery piece of our history and re-awaken the calling in those who may have lost sight and help re-establish again, the Holistic and relational Midwifery care of old from all cultures throughout the world.

Please don’t misunderstand me and think that I’m calling for an elimination of all that we have more presently learned and found to be of great benefit to Mamababy. However, I do believe that we have embraced many practices that are not beneficial to serving and building up the whole Mamababy and family in love and health through childbearing. May we all be covered and blessed in our holy work. Amein

Mission

At the heart of our mission is a passionate commitment to reviving and honoring the sacred roots of Midwifery. We aim to inspire and gather those who feel a deep calling to restore the Classical approach to Midwifery—one that prioritizes holistic, spiritual care for mothers, babies, and families.

Through our upcoming Classical Midwifery Conference in Greece in 2025, we seek to create a nurturing space for practitioners to reconnect with ancient traditions, foster genuine relationships, and engage in meaningful dialogue about the future of Midwifery. We believe in preserving the art of midwifery as it was once practiced, blending it thoughtfully with the valuable insights of modern care, all in service to Mamababy and honoring the sacred journey of childbirth.

Join us in this vital mission to reawaken the spirit of Classical Midwifery and embrace a future rooted in love, health, and holistic well-being.

Vision

We envision a renaissance of Classical Midwifery, where the sacred traditions of loving care for mamababy and families are remembered, honored, and integrated into contemporary practice. Our aim is to create a global community of midwives who embrace holistic, spiritual approaches, drawing inspiration from the rich tapestry of historical wisdom.

Through our initiatives, including the Classical Midwifery Conference in Greece in 2025, we seek to foster a deep connection to the ancient roots of Midwifery, empowering practitioners to reclaim their calling and provide compassionate, relationship-centered care that promotes health and well-being for all. We aspire to create a future where Midwifery flourishes, enriched by the past yet vibrant in its present and future expressions.

Stay true to your midwifery calling—weaving the sacred and holistic wisdom with relationship into your care. C.G.
